A few simple tricks can take your chili from good to great! Here’s what I’ve learned from making lots of chili over the years.
Build the flavor: Sauté onions and garlic until fragrant, then add your ground meat and cook until browned. This simple step adds so much flavor.
Don’t skimp on the spices: Chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, and oregano add warmth and depth without a lot of extra ingredients. Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for an extra kick of spice!
Add more veggies: Bell peppers, zucchini, carrots, and even sweet potatoes are easy ways to add more nutrients and texture.
Let it simmer: If you have the time, let your chili cook a little longer. This helps the flavors blend and makes it taste even better.
Adjust the thickness: For thicker chili, simmer it uncovered or mash some of the beans. If it’s too thick, stir in a splash of broth.
Have fun with toppings: Greek yogurt, avocado, fresh cilantro, diced onions, jalapeños, and a little shredded cheese are all delicious options.
What to Serve With Chili
A warm bowl of chili is pretty great on its own, but I almost always want something on the side! A slice of homemade cornbread recipe is my favorite, especially when it’s warm with a little butter.
You can also serve chili with tortilla chips, a simple green salad, baked potatoes, or even spoon it over rice. And don’t forget the toppings! We love setting out shredded cheese, avocado, green onions, and sour cream so everyone can make their bowl just the way they like it.
How to Store & Freeze Chili
Chili is perfect for leftovers and meal prep, and I think it tastes even better the next day! Here’s how to keep it fresh so you can enjoy it all week long.
In the fridge: Let chili cool slightly, then transfer it to an airtight container. Store in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days.
In the freeze: Once cooled, divide chili into freezer-safe containers or bags. Freeze for up to 3 months for the best quality. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
To reheat: Warm chili in a pot over medium-low heat, stirring often until heated through. You can also microwave individual portions. Add a splash of broth or water if it’s too thick.
