A Note from Kim

A Family Favorite for Years

My mom used to make this 7-Layer Dip for family get-togethers, and it was always one of the first appetizers to disappear. It instantly reminds me of big gatherings, loud conversations, and everyone standing around the table grabbing one more scoop before it was gone.

I hadn’t made (or eaten) it in quite a while, so I decided to bring it back for the Super Bowl, and it was even more delicious than I remembered. Each layer brings its own punch of flavor, from creamy, tangy taco-seasoned sour cream and guacamole to savory beans, cheese, fresh tomatoes, and briny olives. I’m so glad it’s back in our rotation for get-togethers and game-day celebrations.

With love (and lots of good eats), - Kim

In my opinion, this is the only way to serve bean dip! So easy to make and everyone always loves it.

What is the order for 7 Layer Dip?

The key to a great 7-layer dip recipe is building the layers in the right order so every bite has a little bit of everything.

You can find the measurements in the recipe card below.

Bowls with guacamole, sour cream, taco seasoning and cheese.

Here is what you need, from bottom to top!

  • Bean dip: The creamy, savory base of the dip. Using FRITOS® Bean Dip keeps things quick and adds great flavor right from the start.
  • Guacamole: Adds a fresh, creamy layer that balances the richness of the beans and sour cream. Store-bought works fine, but I love my homemade version, and it makes the perfect amount with 3-4 avocados.
  • Sour cream: Mixed with taco seasoning, this creates a tangy, Tex-Mex flavor that ties everything together. You could also use Greek yogurt, but it won’t have quite the same flavor.
  • Shredded cheese: I like to use Mexican blend shredded cheese for that signature cheesy layer.
  • Diced Roma tomatoes: Provide a fresh, juicy pop of flavor and a little brightness on top.
  • Green onions: Add mild onion flavor and a bit of color that makes the dip look extra delicious.
  • Black olives: A salty, savory topping that pairs perfectly with the other layers, add as much or as little as you like.
  • FRITOS® Scoops or tortilla chips: Perfect for scooping up all those delicious layers. Scoops-style chips work especially well for this dip.

Make It Your Way

  • Add taco meat: Brown some ground beef with taco seasoning and add it as an extra layer for a heartier dip.
  • Make it spicy: Stir diced jalapeños into the sour cream layer or sprinkle sliced jalapeños on top for a little heat. You could even add a layer of salsa or pico de gallo!
  • Use refried beans: Swap the bean dip for refried beans, if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Add shredded lettuce: Sprinkle finely shredded lettuce over the top just before serving for extra freshness and crunch.
  • Try different cheese: Pepper jack, Monterey Jack cheese or sharp cheddar is a great way to mix it up.
  • Add diced avocado: If you love extra creamy texture, scatter fresh diced avocado over the top before serving.
  • Add fresh cilantro: A sprinkle of chopped cilantro adds bright, fresh flavor.
  • Make individual cups: Layer the dip in small cups or jars for easy single-serve portions at parties.

Kim’s Recipe Tips

  • Use ripe but firm tomatoes: Very juicy tomatoes can make the dip watery. I recommend removing the seeds and watery part before dicing.
  • Drain ingredients well: Make sure olives and any other canned toppings are well drained so the dip doesn’t get soggy.
  • Chill before serving (optional): Letting the dip sit in the refrigerator for 30–60 minutes helps the flavors come together.
  • Add fresh toppings last: Ingredients like green onions and tomatoes look best when added just before serving.
  • Serve with sturdy chips: Thick chips like FRITOS® Scoops!® or tortilla chips hold up best to the hearty layers without breaking. In my opinion, the FRITOS® Scoops!® taste best with this dip!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to warm the beans?

No, you don’t need to warm the bean dip before spreading it in the dish. It spreads easily at room temperature and works perfectly as a cool base layer. If it’s chilled and slightly firm, you can let it sit out for a few minutes to soften before spreading.

How to keep guacamole from turning brown in 7 layer bean dip?

Use guacamole that contains lime juice to help slow down browning since the acidity preserves color and freshness. For extra protection, press plastic wrap directly against the surface before refrigerating.

Are you supposed to eat 7 layer dip cold or hot?

Old fashioned 7 layer dip is typically served cold or at room temperature, it’s not meant to be baked or served hot since many of the layers (like sour cream and guacamole) are best when chilled. You can let it sit out for a short time while serving, but store it in the fridge until you’re ready to enjoy it.
