Why you should make this recipe

  • Simple and quick to make. Just 6 key ingredients to make this bright, flavorful strawberry salsa recipe. It takes less than 15 minutes to chop everything up and toss it together. So easy!
  • Healthy. Strawberry salsa is a nutritious snack, appetizer, or way to add extra fresh flavor to grilled meats. It’s also vegan and gluten-free. Avocados are rich in nutrients and add healthy fats and fiber. And according to WebMD strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C and other antioxidants, which help reduce the risk of serious health conditions like cancer, diabetes, stroke, and heart disease.
  • Delicious. This recipe combines the sweetness of ripe strawberries and the creaminess of avocados with the crunch of red onions. Finely diced jalapeño peppers add a spicy kick, while a generous sprinkle of cilantro brings a refreshing touch. The addition of fresh lime juice, salt and pepper infuses it with a tanginess that ties all the flavors together beautifully.

Ingredients needed

Sweet, juicy strawberries are combined with creamy avocado, spicy peppers, crisp onion and flavorful cilantro and then it all gets tossed in lime juice. So good! Here’s everything you’ll need to make it:

  • Strawberries. Look for ripe strawberries that are bright red with fresh, green caps. They should be firm but not hard. Rinse the strawberries gently just before you’re ready to use them to keep them from becoming waterlogged.
  • Red onion. Red onions have a mild, sweet flavor that works well in this salsa. Rinse diced onions under cold water to remove the sulfurous compounds that can give them a harsh taste.
  • Jalapeño peppers. Adds a subtle spice to the salsa. Use one or two jalapeño peppers, depending on the amount of heat you like.
  • Fresh cilantro. This herb adds a refreshing, slightly citrusy flavor. Use both leaves and tender stems, which have a lot of flavor. If you’re one of the people who find cilantro to taste soapy, you can substitute it with flat-leaf parsley or just omit.
  • Avocado. Choose an avocado that is ripe but still firm. It should give slightly when gently squeezed but shouldn’t feel squishy. Overripe avocados will brown quickly and give the salsa a mushy texture.
  • Lime juice. Fresh lime juice adds a tanginess that brightens up the salsa. It also helps keep the avocado from browning.
  • Salt & pepper. These essential seasonings bring out the flavors of the other ingredients in this recipe.

How to make this recipe

A mix of avocado, onion and peppers may seem like an odd addition to berries. It totally works, though! If you love spicy-sweet, you’re going to adore this combo. Here’s the simple process for making it:

  1. Prep the ingredients. Wash and chop the fruit and veggies, and add them to a medium to large serving bowl. Toss to coat in the lime juice.
  2. Season. Taste and adjust ingredients as desired. You may want to add more salt & black pepper.
  3. Store for later or serve. Cover and store in the fridge. Serve room temperature or chilled. Enjoy with tortilla chips, pita chips or use as a topping for fish, chicken or toss in with a green salad.

Expert tips

  • Make sure to finely dice your fruit and vegetables so that the salsa can be easily scooped up with chips. The best way to dice an avocado is to slice it lengthwise around the seed, twist to separate the halves, remove the seed, score the flesh in a crisscross pattern, and then scoop it out of the skin with a spoon.
  • This recipe works best with fresh strawberries. Frozen strawberries will water down the salsa.
  • There is jalapeño in this recipe, but removing the seeds and ribs removes almost all of the heat. If you prefer a spicier salsa, you can add some of the seeds or ribs to the mix. Feel free to use only one jalapeño, if you’re sensitive to spice.
  • Be sure to use fresh fruit and vegetables. Overripe fruits can make the salsa mushy, while underripe ones will lack flavor. We do not recommend frozen strawberries, as they will water down the salsa.

Frequently asked questions

Do strawberries go with cilantro?

In this sweet and savory dip the strawberries and cilantro compliment each other very well. However, if you’re not a fan of cilantro you can use another favorite herb or simply leave it out.

What is fruit salsa made of?

Classic fruit salsa is made with one, two or a few different fruits. Strawberries, mango, pineapple and kiwi are popular fruits to use in fruit salsa recipes. You may also see peaches or blueberries used. The fruit is usually mixed with red onion, jalapeno, sometimes tomatoes, avocado and herbs. Lime juice is commonly used to dress the salad and sometimes honey is used to sweeten the mix.

Why is lime juice added to salsa?

Lime juice adds acidity to the salsa to keep it fresh for longer. It also adds a bright, vibrant flavor. If you don’t have lime juice on hand, lemon juice can be used. We recommend fresh lime or lemon juice for the best overall taste.

Variations

Even though this recipe is pretty spectacular as-is, feel free to use your favorite ingredients to customize it. Here’s some options:

  • Fruit. Swap out the strawberries with another fruit or use a combination of fruits. Mango, papaya, or pineapple would all be wonderful.
  • Add-ins. Roasted corn would be so tasty and add even more flavor and texture. Another great addition would be crumbled feta or Cotija cheese.
  • Herbs. Cilantro is a classic salsa ingredient, but you can use green onions, flat-leaf parsley or mint if you prefer.

Serving suggestions

  • This dip is wonderful served with tortilla chips, or for a sweet twist try cinnamon sugar chips. It’s best to use a sturdy chip that can hold up to the chunky fruits without breaking.
  • For a refreshing, summery touch to your dish, top grilled chicken, pork, or salmon with this salsa.
  • Use this salsa as a topping for your favorite tacos. It’s especially delicious with fish tacos or shrimp tacos.
  • Mix this into a fresh green salad for a burst of juicy sweetness and color.
  • Add this dip to an array of snacks for a unique and vibrant appetizer option.

Experiment, have fun, make it your own. Just be sure and double the recipe – you’re going to want boatloads of this goodness. Trust me.

Storage recommendation

Transfer any leftover strawberry salsa to an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to three days.

Before serving leftovers, give this a good stir to redistribute the flavors and ingredients. Add a bit more salt, if needed.
