This was absolutely delicious! I’ve made it two days in a row. Accidentally skipped the cinnamon today but will definitely be adding it into my next one. So good!

What’s in this recipe?
This apple smoothie recipe has ingredients that you probably already have on-hand. Mix them up for major apple cinnamon deliciousness! See the recipe card below for a list of exact ingredient measurements.

- Apple: Any favorite apple variety will work for this recipe. My favorite is Honeycrisp or pink lady! Granny Smith apples may be too tart.
- Protein powder: Vanilla protein powder tastes wonderful in this smoothie and can add up to about 25 grams of protein, depending on what type you use. I like PEScience vanilla protein powder.
- Milk: Any milk will work, but use unsweetened vanilla almond milk or cashew milk to keep the calories low.
- Yogurt: Plain nonfat Greek yogurt will add a boost of protein and delicious creaminess.
- Oats: Rolled oats or quick oats add rich heartiness. Don’t use steel cut oats because the texture is too crunchy.
- Vanilla: Pure vanilla extract for warm, sweet flavor.
- Maple syrup: If you’d like your smoothie to taste sweeter, add a small amount of pure maple syrup. You could also use another sweetener like stevia, honey or agave syrup.
- Ground cinnamon: For that classic cinnamon apple flavor! You can add in some nutmeg too!
- Ice: This keeps everything cold and creates a nice thick texture.
Variations and substitutions
Experiment with ingredients to make this apple pie smoothie your own! Here are some suggestions:
- Add greens: If you’re looking to get more greens in your diet, try adding a handful or two of baby spinach or kale leaves. It will turn the smoothie a different color, but you won’t be able to taste the greens.
- Frozen cauliflower: I love adding frozen cauliflower to my protein shakes! It gives you a good amount of nutrients and you can’t taste the cauliflower at all. In fact, I like to use it instead of ice!
- More fruit: Feel free to add in a frozen ripe banana for natural sweetness and/or frozen blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, mango, cherries, pineapple, peaches, or any other favorite. Use frozen fruit for extra thickness.
- Add more nutrition: A great addition is flaxseed meal, chia seeds or hemp seeds for an increase of healthy fats, omegas and minerals.
- Make it vegan and dairy free: If you’d like to keep this vegan and dairy free, use dairy-free yogurt, non-dairy milk and plant-based protein powder.
Recipe tip
If you add in either a frozen banana or about 1 cup frozen cauliflower, you won’t need to add any ice and your apple smoothie will be really thick and creamy. If you don’t like the taste of banana, use cauliflower because you can’t taste it at all.

Helpful tips
Smoothies are quick and easy but there are a few tricks to getting just the right consistency and taste! Here are a few tips that will help you make it just right!
- To make a thicker smoothie: Using frozen fruit or adding in frozen cauliflower will make the smoothie thicker and creamier.
- Add liquid as needed: To make your smoothie thinner or if you’re having trouble fully blending it, add a bit more milk. High-powered blenders will blend frozen ingredients much better, so if you have a regular or personal-size blender, you may need to add more milk.
- Start blending on low speed: Start the blender on low speed, then gradually increase the speed to high to help blend everything blend. End with the blender on low speed.
Frequently asked questions
No, there’s no need to peel the apple before blending it into a smoothie, but you will want to remove the core and seeds. Apple seeds are not safe to eat, so be sure to discard them.
I recommend a sweet apple for this recipe. Gala, Fuji, pink lady and Honeycrisp apples are my favs, but you can really use any variety that you have on hand. For a more tart flavor, use a green apple.
Yes! I like to freeze them in chunks. It’s best to flash freeze them first and then add them to a bag, so the chunks don’t get stuck together. When using frozen apples for smoothies, you may need more milk and you can omit the ice, since the frozen apple will add a thick, icy texture.
