Mississippi Mud Pie is what happens when brownies, pudding, and pie collide—in the best possible way. With layers of Oreo crust, rich fudgy brownie, silky chocolate pudding, and a fluffy whipped cream topping, it’s a chocolate-packed dream. It does take a little time and patience because of the different layers, but every chilled, creamy, decadent bite is 100% worth the wait!

I made this recipe for a family birthday! Everyone thought it was something from a restaurant. So good and there wasn’t a slice left!

Why this pie is pure magic

  • Four dreamy layers: Oreo crust, fudgy brownie, chocolate pudding, and whipped cream all in one bite.
  • Chocolate overload (in a good way!): Rich, indulgent, and deeply satisfying.
  • Great make-ahead dessert: Chill it in advance and it’s ready to wow when you are.
  • Perfect for parties: A total crowd-pleaser that looks as impressive as it tastes. I tested this for my family on Easter, and let me tell you—it disappeared fast.
  • Texture heaven: Crunchy crust, gooey brownie, creamy pudding, and airy topping.

Other pie recipes I’m obsessed with: no-bake chocolate pudding pie, easy cream cheese pie and 3-ingredient Oreo pie!

Ingredients you’ll need

The ingredient list for this Mississippi mud pie recipe is short and sweet! Just a handful of store-bought staples come together to create layers of rich, chocolatey goodness. Here’s what you’ll need:

Package of brownie mix and pudding mix near bowls with Oreos, Cool Whip, milk and oil.
  • Oreos: Use regular (not Double Stuf) for the right crumb-to-filling ratio. No need to remove the cream filling!
  • Butter: Salted or unsalted butter both work. It will bind the cookie crumbs together and add richness.
  • For the brownie layer: Any boxed fudge brownie mix works, but Ghirardelli Double Chocolate is my top choice for extra-rich flavor. Prepare the mix according to the box, which is usually adding oil, egg and water.
  • Milk: Use cold 2% or whole milk, non-dairy or plant-based milk may not set properly.
  • Instant chocolate pudding mix: Be sure to grab the instant kind (not cook-and-serve). Chocolate fudge flavor adds even more richness if you want to boost it!
  • Cool Whip or homemade whipped cream: Cool Whip is quick and convenient, but homemade whipped cream takes it up a notch (see notes in the recipe card if making your own).
  • Optional garnish: Use crushed Oreos, chopped nuts, fudge, or chocolate shavings as a topping for extra texture and a pretty presentation!

Variations

Ways you can make this pie your own:

  • Different crust options: Swap the classic chocolate cookie crust with graham crackers, chocolate graham crackers, or even Biscoff cookies for a spiced twist.
  • Use homemade brownies: Got a favorite fudgy brownie recipe? Use it instead of boxed mix for a from-scratch upgrade.
  • Chocolate pudding swap: Try using dark chocolate, French silk, or even mocha-flavored instant pudding for a flavor twist.
  • Add a nutty crunch: Stir chopped pecans or walnuts into the brownie batter or sprinkle them on top for texture and classic southern flair.
  • Top it your way: Garnish with mini chocolate chips, hot fudge drizzle, chocolate curls, or extra crushed cookies—there’s no wrong way to finish it.

Instructions

  • Make the crust: Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Add 24 Oreos (filling and all) to a food processor or blender and grind into fine crumbs.
  • Transfer the Oreo crumbs to a medium mixing bowl and stir with the melted butter.
  • Add the mixture into a deep 9" pie dish and press into an even layer on the bottom and up the sides. I like to do this using the bottom of a drinking glass or measuring cup to get the crumbs tightly packed into the bottom of the dish. Bake for 10 minutes, or until firm.
  • Make the brownie layer: In a medium bowl, prepare the brownie mix according to the package instructions (mine used oil, an egg, and water).
  • Pour the batter into the pre-baked crust and spread evenly with a spatula. Bake for about 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean. (Mine baked for 35 minutes.)
  • Place the pie pan on a cooling rack and let the brownie layer cool completely (about 2 hours) before adding the pudding layer. It should be at room temperature.
  • Make the pudding: Pour milk into medium bowl. Add dry pudding mix and beat with a wire whisk or fork for 2 minutes or until well blended. Spoon over cooled brownie layer. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours. This will give the pudding time to chill and set.
  • To assemble: When ready to serve, spread the whipped topping evenly over the top of the pudding layer. Garnish with whatever you'd like. I like to keep it simple with crushed Oreo cookies, but you can also add chopped pecans, chocolate shavings and/or a drizzle of chocolate fudge.

Notes

To make homemade whipped topping, beat 2 cups heavy cream, 2 teaspoons vanilla, and 6 tablespoons powdered sugar with a mixer at medium high speed until soft peaks form, about 1 minute.

Helpful tips

Here are some helpful tips for making the best Mississippi mud pie:

  • No food processor? Simply place the cookies in a zip-top bag and crush them with a rolling pin until you have fine crumbs.
  • Don’t overbake the brownie: You want it fudgy, not dry. Check with a toothpick—moist crumbs are perfect. It does take a bit longer than a pan of brownies because it is baked in a pie plate.
  • Cool completely before layering: Let the brownie base cool fully before adding pudding, or it may melt and become runny.
  • Make ahead friendly: This dessert holds up well, so feel free to make it the day before for less stress. In fact, you can divide the steps, so it doesn’t feel overwhelming. Prep the Oreo crust and brownie layer today and the pudding and whipped cream layer tomorrow.

Frequently asked questions

What if I don’t have a deep-dish pie pan?

Deep-dish pie plates typically have a depth of 2 to 2½ inches, providing ample space for multiple layers. In contrast, standard pie plates are usually around 1½ inches deep. If you’re unsure about your pie plate’s depth, simply measure from the bottom to the top rim using a ruler. You can use a standard 9×9-inch baking dish instead. Just note the layers may be slightly shorter.

Can I use a store-bought Oreo crust?

Store-bought pie crusts tend to be shallow, which can be a challenge for layered desserts. To accommodate the layers, consider using two standard crusts and dividing the filling between them. However, if you find a store-bought crust labeled as “deep dish” that will work.

Why is it called Mississippi mud pie?

Mississippi Mud Pie gets its name from its rich, chocolatey layers that resemble the thick, dark mud along the Mississippi River. While the exact origin is a bit murky, the dessert is believed to have originated in Mississippi, and its name reflects both its appearance and regional roots.

How to store leftovers

  • In the refrigerator: Cover the pie tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil, or store it in an airtight container. It will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to about 4 days.
  • In the freezer: I only recommend freezing the brownie and crust layers. If you’d like to freeze it, wrap the pie (or individual slices) tightly in plastic wrap and then in foil, or place it in a freezer-safe container. Freeze for up to 2 months. When ready to enjoy, thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Then, you can add the pudding and Cool Whip layers.
