Ingredients

Cake:

  • 1 (13.25 to 16 ounce) box chocolate cake mix
  • 1 (3 to 3.9 ounce) box instant chocolate pudding mix unprepared
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ¾ cup vegetable oil
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Filling:

  • 1 (3 to 3.9 ounce) box instant chocolate pudding mix unprepared
  • 2 cups whole milk

Frosting:

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • cup instant chocolate pudding mix unprepared

Topping:

  • 16 Oreos crushed
  • 9 Milano cookies or more if desired
  • 3-4 Ghost Peeps or more if desired
  • 12 candy pumpkins or more if desired
  • Sprinkles
  • Black gel icing for writing

Instructions

Cake:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking pan. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, mix all the ingredients until fully combined. The batter will be thick—use a rubber spatula to spread it evenly in the prepared pan.
  • Bake for 28–32 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake to cool for about 30 minutes, then poke holes all over using the handle of a wooden spoon, ready for your topping.

Filling:

  • Whisk together the pudding mix and milk for 2 minutes, then allow to thicken slightly.
  • Spread the pudding over the top of the cake.

Frosting:

  • In a large bowl or stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, whisk together the frosting ingredients until thick and fluffy.
  • Spread the frosting over the top of the cake. This will get a little messy, but don’t worry your Oreo crumbles will cover it. I found this easiest to spread with a butter knife.

Topping:

  • Place the Oreos in a food processor and pulse until they form fine crumbs. Evenly sprinkle the crumbs over the top of the cake.
  • Use a food-safe marker or icing to write “R.I.P.” on the Milano cookies to create tombstones, then gently press them into the frosting so they stand upright.
  • Position the ghost Peeps in the frosting so they stand; if needed, use toothpicks to help secure them.
  • Arrange the candy pumpkins around the ghosts and tombstones for a festive touch. Finish with sprinkles to add extra color. Chill for a couple of hours before serving for the best flavor and texture.
