Bring this irresistible Mexican Cottage Cheese Dip to your next next picnic, potluck or party, or start planning your game day menu! This is such a simple, healthier appetizer to make, yet the taste is incredible. Cottage cheese is blended with avocado, and then mixed with black beans, sweet corn, bright tomatoes, jalapeño for just a little heat, green onions and Sriracha sauce to create one of the tastiest snacks.

Whip this up for football Sunday, parties or really any holiday, and watch friends and family devour. You’ll love that this is protein-packed and healthier because you can’t have just one bite, it’s that good!

All I can say is OMG this is absolutely fantastic. The creaminess of the cottage cheese and the avocado makes it fools your mouth into thinking this is sour cream or a much higher calorie dip. The vegetables and the beans finishes off the dish. I did go slow on the hot sauce adding a 1/2 tsp. at a time checking the heat as I went along. Everything just blended perfectly.

Why you’ll love this recipe

  • Quick & easy. This cottage cheese dip recipe is ready in just about 10 minutes, including prep time. All you have to do is mix the cottage cheese and avocado, then stir everything else together.
  • Make ahead. This is a great appetizer to make in advance of a party or get together because it tastes even better after the flavors have a chance to intensify in the fridge.
  • Creamy and super tasty. Whether or not you’re a cottage cheese fanatic, I guarantee you will LOVE this dip! Cottage cheese is a great base for both sweet and savory recipes because it’s neutral in flavor. It just adds major creaminess and takes on all of the Mexican flavors in this recipe.
  • A crowd pleaser. From kids to adults, everyone loves this! It will definitely be a hit at your next party or gathering!

Ingredients needed

This cottage cheese dip recipe is made with super simple ingredients. You’ll have a delicious high-protein snack or appetizer whipped up in just minutes! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Cottage cheese. The base of the dip. Even if you don’t think you like cottage cheese, trust me when I say you’ll fall in love when it’s mixed with avocado and all of the other Mexican-flavored ingredients. Plus, it gives each 1/3 cup serving over 6 grams of protein! We recommend Good Culture or Nancy’s cottage cheese brands.
  • Avocado. Mixed with the cottage cheese, it adds an extra creamy texture, richness and flavor.
  • Black beans. They add texture, a boost of protein and fiber and make this dip really satisfying.
  • Corn. For a bit of crunch and sweetness.
  • Tomatoes. Use 2 Roma tomatoes that have been seeded, or substitute with about 1 1/2 cups chopped grape tomatoes or cherry tomatoes.
  • Jalapeño. To add a lovely Mexican flavor with very little heat, mince finely and discard all seeds.
  • Green onions. Use only the green part for texture and a mild chive taste. You can sub with chives, if you’d like.
  • Sriracha. Adds the perfect amount of heat without being overwhelming. However, you can omit, if you’d like.
  • Seasoning. All you need is a bit of garlic salt to really bring out all of the flavor.
  • Garnish. Optional, but we love the extra pop of color a sprinkling of chopped fresh cilantro adds, especially if you’re serving this at a party. Any fresh herbs would work.
Small bowl of black beans, corn, cottage cheese, tomatoes, avocado, green onions and sriracha sauce.

How to make this recipe

There’s no need to buy store-bought dip when you can whip up this cottage cheese dip in minutes! It’s so easy, you’ll want to make it on repeat. Here’s the simple process:

  1. Blend. Combine cottage cheese and avocado in a food processor until smooth. Alternatively, if you do not have a food processor or blender, you can combine the cottage cheese and mashed avocado in a medium bowl (it will just be a little extra chunky).
  1. Stir. Transfer cottage cheese to medium bowl and add all other ingredients. Stir to combine.
  2. Serve. Add the mixture to a pretty serving bowl, and garnish with chopped fresh cilantro, fresh basil or fresh parsley, if you’d like. Serve with your favorite tortilla chips, crackers and/or pita bread. Also, tasty served with raw veggies and used as a salad topping. Enjoy!

Recipe tip

Cottage cheese dip is really delicious chilled for about 1 hour before serving. It’s great enjoyed a bit cold, and this also gives a chance for all of the ingredients to meld together and intensify.

Expert tips

Good news, this cottage cheese dip recipe is foolproof and easy to customize. You can make it just the way you like it! Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Type of cottage cheese. Use either low-fat or full-fat cottage cheese, depending on your preference. However, the more fat in the cottage cheese, the richer the dip will taste.
  • Taste before salting. Some cottage cheese brands can be quite salty, so if you’re sensitive to salt, taste and then add a small amount of garlic salt at a time. Same goes for adding any regular salt.
  • Make it spicy. As written, this dip is very mild. If you’d like to add a little heat, feel free to add in some seeds with the jalapeño. You can also sprinkle in more sriracha sauce or other hot sauce. In addition, adding a dash or two of cayenne pepper would really kick up the heat!
  • Seasoning. Other seasonings you might want to try: taco seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper and lemon juice. Start with a little at a time.
  • Food safety. Since this contains dairy, it’s best not to leave it at room temperature for longer than 2 hours.

Frequently asked questions

What goes good in cottage cheese?

Cottage cheese is like a blank canvas and is delicious with anything from minced herbs to veggies, nuts, fruit, or salsa. You could even make a healthy dessert snack by adding jam, granola and/or chocolate chips or shavings.

Can I use yogurt to make this recipe instead of cottage cheese?

Yes! You can sub an equal amount of plain greek yogurt for the cottage cheese. It will change the flavor some and be a bit more tart.

Is cottage cheese dip healthy?

This appetizer is much healthier than most! Cottage cheese is high in protein and is an excellent source of calcium. It has less saturated fat than cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise and ricotta cheese. It’s also full of vitamins and minerals that support a healthy diet. For more nutrition information, see the bottom of the recipe card.

Serving suggestions

There are so many ways to serve this incredible dip! Here are some options:

  • Dip. We love this with tortilla chips, Fritos or pita chips! It’s also great with fresh-cut vegetables like carrot sticks, sliced cucumbers, bell pepper strips, celery, and radishes.
  • Spread. Use this dip as a spread on sandwiches, wraps, burgers, and toast for extra flavor and creaminess.
  • Dressing: You can whisk in a small amount of milk or buttermilk until you’ve reached desired consistency for dressing a salad or drizzling over a grain bowl.

Storage recommendations

Store any leftover cottage cheese dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Remember to give it a good stir before enjoying it from the fridge. We do not recommend freezing this because it will change the texture.
