Book Review of If I Stay

I hope your Tuesday is off to a fantastic start!

I’ve been participating in Julie’s book club for quite a while now and I’ve enjoyed almost every book that we’ve read, especially The Happiness Project. Book clubs are great for getting you to go outside your comfort level and read a book that you may not have chosen on your own. For book club this month, the book with the most votes was If I Stay, by Gayle Forman.

Summary of If I Stay:

If I Stay is a young adult novel that centers around Mia, whose entire family has just been killed in a horrible car accident. Mia is in a coma and watches everything that’s going on above her hospital bed. She basically has the choice, to stay and live or to die. During most of the novel, she is watching her friends and family members visit her in the hospital and then she thinks of something in the past and the story flips to her past experiences. When I first read the summary of this book, it sounded really interesting and like something that I would like, so this is the book I chose to vote for.

Thoughts on If I Stay:

There are tons of positive reviews for this book and it is often compared to The Lovely Bones, which is one of my all time favorite books, but for me it was just okay. I did like the way the story was told, with Mia reliving past experiences and then jumping back to current time. It’s a quick short read, but never really pulled me in and had me vested in the characters.  I’m typically a very emotional person and after reading the summary of the book, I was fully expecting to shed some tears. But the book just kind of fell flat, to me and didn’t evoke the emotion that I thought it would. By the halfway point, I really didn’t care about the characters or what decision Mia chose. I hate to be  a “Debbie Downer”….in my opinion, this book just wasn’t anything to get excited about.

Be sure to check out other bloggers’ reviews of If I Stay, which will be up on Julie’s blog on Friday.

Something to think about….

Have you read If I Stay? Thoughts?

Are there any books that you’ve read, that had really positive reviews, but you just couldn’t get into?

Any great summer read suggestions? I need a really good book for the beach next week {one that I actually read and not listen to}.

See you back here tomorrow for What I Ate Wednesday on the second day of the Conscious Cleanse!

I haven’t read If I Stay, but it’s a shame that you didn’t end up enjoying it – the storyline sounds really interesting. I actually just picked up And The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini, and seeing as I enjoyed his other books so much (The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns), I’m hoping that this one will be another winner.

I read this book too for the club but I did actually enjoy it. I can’t say it made me really emotional but I was rooting for Mia to want to stay. I’m reading all of Gillian Flynns books at the moment after reading Gone Girl I’m obsessed with her books.

I tried reading Life of Pi but just couldn’t get into it.
